4. Trauma-Informed Responses to Disclosures of Gender-Based Violence
4.1 Trauma
In this section of the module, we will learn about trauma (which can occur as a result of experiencing or witnessing gender-based violence). We will discuss the neurobiology of trauma and types of trauma responses. The section will end with three myth vs fact questions to help and understand how different people may respond to trauma.
4.2 Trauma-informed responses to disclosures
When someone discloses an incident of gender-based violence, 70% of the time it is to a friend or family member. This section provides information about how to respond with a trauma-informed lens to a disclosure. This topic outlines some commonly used phrases and comments that can actually create harm and discourage victim/survivors from seeking further support.
4.3 Listen, support, refer
Building on the last section, we outline a response model for you to follow when someone makes a disclosure, along with some specific phrases and supports you can offer. A final scenario is used to supplement these two sections, which steps you through some potential responses to a disclosure of gender-based violence.
4.4 Final quiz
Test your knowledge with a short quiz that covers content from all three module topics. You’ll need to achieve 85% to pass the quiz and complete the module.
