Ethical Bystander
A bystander is someone who witnesses an event. An ethical bystander is someone who witnesses an event that is disrespectful or harmful, chooses to do something, and considers the safest way to intervene. Ethical bystanders play an essential role in building a culture of respect and making UQ, and the broader community, a safer space. The Ethical Bystander campaign was created to help educate about how and when we can all do our part (big or small) to make a difference for someone who is experiencing or has experienced harassment.
Ethical Bystander is a current campaign that was developed and launched in 2023. To learn more about how you can be an ethical bystander, and to explore Ethical Bystander campaign resources, visit the webpage below.

The Respect Is… campaign was developed collaboratively between Student Support and Wellbeing Services and UQ Union. This campaign aims to share student voices about what respect means to them, and to promote respectful and safe spaces for everyone in the UQ community. The quotes used in our campaign were shared from students in recognition of Sexual Violence Awareness Month and Mental Health Week.

Random Acts of Respect
(Previous campaign - Developed in 2019)
The Random Acts of Respect campaign was developed collaboratively between the UQ Union (UQU) and UQ Student Support and Wellbeing Services. Drawing on student contributions to a column in the UQ student magazine, Semper Floreat, the campaign aims to normalise ethical bystander intervention and increase awareness about how to intervene when witnessing an act of potential violence or disrespect.
