Sexual Harassment and Sexual Assault: What are the drivers and how can staff respond?
All staff at Australian universities need to be able to identify and take appropriate action on incidents of sexual harassment and sexual assault. This online module was developed by Universities Australia and the Australian Psychological Society and adopted at UQ for ALL university staff to complete. It will take approximately one hour to complete the module.
By the end of this module, you will be able to:
- Identify behaviours that constitute sexual harassment and sexual assault;
- Understand their drivers;
- Better understand how often they occur and their effects;
- Identify barriers to reporting, disclosing and seeking help;
- Respond and support students and staff appropriately and effectively; and
- Identify support systems in your university
Sexual Misconduct Prevention and Response 101
Sexual assault and sexual harassment are serious issues effecting students and staff at universities across Australia. This training focuses on sexual misconduct prevention and response, equipping participants with the foundational knowledge to be active in prevention and support students and colleagues who may disclose experiences of sexual assault and/or sexual harassment.
Key topics covered by this training include primary prevention and culture change, different forms of sexual assault and harassment, consent, being an ethical bystander, the neurobiology of trauma, trauma-informed response to disclosures, ensuring professional boundaries and mitigating safety and risk. Participants will learn about reporting and support options, both within UQ and external, for staff and students.

Sexual Misconduct First Responder Training
Following the Sexual Misconduct 101 training, further your knowledge in trauma-informed response and develop skills around responding with compassion. This training explores with participants the role of a first responder to disclosures of sexual assault and/or sexual harassment. Participants develop skill through practice, including role plays, and develop knowledge about appropriate language. This training presents UQ Sexual Misconduct Policy and Procedures in detail and helps participants work through the Procedures. Time is allowed for further reflection, discussion, questions, and confidence building. Participants will learn strategies for self-care and responses to vicarious trauma, including recognising when and how to access help to maintain positive health.
*Please note that Sexual Misconduct Prevention and Response 101 is a pre-requisite to participate in this training.

Ethical Bystander Training
Secondary prevention focuses on the immediate response to violence or harassment as it occurs, to stop it from escalating or getting worse. We want to promote an ethical bystander approach equipping students and staff with the knowledge, skills and confidence to intervene safely if they witness disrespectful behaviour.
This interactive workshop will guide participants through specific scenarios in which you will explore strategies that everyday people can use to speak up and take action to make a positive difference. Please allow one hour for this training.
